China’s Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen said that his country is ready to cooperate with the implementation of the Teesta development project if the Bangladesh government wants.
He said this at a press conference on Bangladesh-China relations at the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka on Tuesday (February 18).
The ambassador said, “China is ready to help Bangladesh in implementing the Teesta River water management project if the government wants. The Teesta project should be implemented as soon as possible for the welfare of thousands of people living on the banks of the Teesta River. However, as a sovereign country, it is the responsibility of Bangladesh to take a decision on the implementation of the project.”
He also said, “In 2021, the Bangladesh government sent a proposal seeking China’s assistance for the Teesta project. After evaluating the project, China reported to the Bangladesh government in 2023 that the project they gave should be revised as there were some unnecessary elements in the project. But since then, we have not received any response from the Bangladesh government.”
