Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that any attempt to delay the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election would bring grave consequences for the country.
He made the remark on Monday morning while addressing a meeting with freedom fighters and their descendants at the Thakurgaon District Freedom Fighters Complex.
Accusing certain quarters of plotting to postpone the election, Mirza Fakhrul said, “There is a conspiracy to delay the election. If it is postponed, it will spell disaster for the nation. Therefore, we urge the interim government to announce the election schedule without further delay. That is our only demand.”
He also reminded the audience of the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War, saying, “Some are trying to spread the notion that everything happened through the movement of 2024. But do not forget that we have a country today because of 1971. We cannot forget the roots of our birth as a nation. A certain group is trying to erase the memory of our Liberation War, but we will never let that happen.”
Mirza Fakhrul further alleged that a section of conspirators, who once collaborated with the Pakistani occupation forces, are now attempting to destroy the country again. “The people of Bangladesh will never compromise with those who sided with the enemies of 1971. They are now trying to swallow the country, but we must resist them,” he said.
Emphasizing unity, he added, “We must stand together and uphold the spirit of the Liberation War. We fought in 1971 to achieve independence, and we must keep that spirit alive.”
The meeting was presided over by valiant freedom fighter and district convenor Noor Karim. Other notable attendees included Naeem Jahangir, Convenor of the Central Command Council of the Freedom Fighters’ Welfare Association; Member Secretary Sadek Ahmed Khan; and Thakurgaon District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin.
