Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has clarified that Bangladesh’s decision to buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from U.S.-based Accelerate Energy is driven by national necessity, not by consideration of any individual.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Procurement, he said the purchase decision was made by analyzing the international market. “LNG is being imported based on the country’s requirements. Although former U.S. ambassador Peter Haas is associated with the company, the decision has nothing to do with personal connections. The same approach is being taken for wheat imports,” he explained.
The adviser also addressed corruption allegations in fertilizer imports, saying the matter will be thoroughly investigated. “The agriculture and industries ministries have been instructed to look into it. The government maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy in this regard,” he stressed.
Commenting on the overall economy, Dr. Ahmed noted that efforts are ongoing to stabilize financial conditions. He highlighted that tax revenue has now reached a steady level, which he described as a positive sign.
