The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has announced that from the 2025–26 assessment year, online income tax return filing will be mandatory for all individual taxpayers. A special directive to this effect was issued by the NBR on Monday, August 3.
According to the order, taxpayers must submit their returns through the designated portal: www.ctaxnbf.gov.bd.
Exceptions to the Rule
However, four categories of individual taxpayers have been exempted from this mandatory requirement:
-
Senior citizens aged 65 or above
-
Physically disabled or persons with special needs (subject to valid documentation)
-
Bangladeshi citizens residing abroad
-
Legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers
Even though exempted, these individuals may still opt to file returns online voluntarily.
Paper Return Allowed in Special Circumstances
The NBR has clarified that if an individual taxpayer faces genuine technical issues with registering or filing through the e-return system, they may apply in writing to the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Taxes.
If the application is deemed valid and justified, paper-based return submission may be approved by the respective Additional or Joint Tax Commissioner.
This exemption applies only if the application is submitted before October 31 of the current year.
Multiple Payment Options for Convenience
Taxpayers can now pay taxes from home using:
-
Bank transfer
-
Debit or credit cards
-
Mobile financial services like bKash, Rocket, Nagad, and others.
NBR has assured that a dedicated support team is in place to assist with any issues during the online return submission process. Help will be available round-the-clock via call centers and other digital platforms.
This move is part of NBR’s broader strategy to digitize and streamline the tax system, making compliance easier and more transparent for all.
