In a departure from a long-standing tradition, Bangladesh Bank has announced that new currency notes will not be distributed to the public ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
Typically, before Eid each year, the central bank along with commercial banks ensures the supply of newly printed banknotes for exchange among customers. These fresh notes are widely used during the festival, especially for giving “Eid Salami” to children and family members—a cultural practice that has created strong seasonal demand for new currency.
However, according to a notice issued by Bangladesh Bank on Sunday (March 8), no new banknotes will be released into the market for this year’s Eid celebrations.
The central bank did not provide further details in the announcement but confirmed that the usual exchange program for fresh currency notes will remain suspended this year.
The decision marks a break from the customary practice that many people look forward to during the festive season.
