BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has stated that any amendment to the Constitution must be carried out through the national parliament. There is no legal scope to change the Constitution outside of this process, he asserted.
He made the remarks on Saturday while addressing a memorial meeting held at the ICMAB Auditorium in Dhaka’s Nilkhet, marking the fifth death anniversary of former BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Mannan.
Khasru said, “Discussions are ongoing about constitutional amendments. But if any amendment is to be made, it must be done within the framework of parliament. Political parties must seek a mandate from the people for such changes—and that mandate must be reflected in parliament.”
He further emphasized that any change must come through transparency and democratic procedures. “There is absolutely no scope for constitutional changes outside of parliament. Those who are trying to disrupt the country’s democratic future and the electoral process do not truly believe in democracy,” he said.
Highlighting the need for a shift in political culture, the BNP leader added, “No matter how many reforms we introduce, they will be ineffective unless the political culture is changed. We must learn to respect differing opinions and practice tolerance. That is the only way we can move the country forward in unity.”
Regarding concerns over possible disunity among opposition parties after August 5, Khasru dismissed such claims. “I don’t see any disunity. Every party has its own philosophy and ideas. We will agree where possible and present the rest to the public. Ultimately, their decision must be brought to parliament for approval.
