The Bangladesh Election Commission Officers’ Association has put forward several demands aimed at strengthening the electoral system and enhancing the institutional capacity of election officials.
Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday (September 16) at the Media Centre of the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, the association’s convener Monir Hossain announced that a national conference of election officials will be held on September 27 to further discuss these issues.
He stated, “We’ve made a number of recommendations to ensure free and fair elections, many of which the Election Commission has already taken into consideration. The commission has also shown a positive stance towards reforming the electoral system.”
Key Demands Presented by the Association:
The association highlighted three core demands during the briefing and offered various suggestions to improve the overall election process. Among the major points raised were:
- Approval and implementation of the proposed organogram, including the creation and upgrading of posts, and ensuring adequate logistical support for election offices.
- Repeal of the National Identity Registration Act 2023 and the restoration of National ID management responsibilities to the Election Commission.
Other leaders present at the event included Mohammad Matiur Rahman, member secretary of the association, and Ashfakur Rahman, convener of the Upazila, Thana, and equivalent level Election Officers’ Association.
The association emphasized that these reforms are crucial to ensure the Election Commission’s independence, operational efficiency, and its ability to conduct credible elections in the future.
