On Tuesday (September 16), Interim Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus held a virtual discussion with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Press Wing of the Chief Adviser’s Office shared details of the conversation.
During the meeting, Georgieva lauded Dr. Yunus’s leadership, saying he had taken charge at a critical time when the nation was under severe economic risks. “You stepped in at the right moment and have already achieved significant progress,” she remarked.
She also praised the government’s bold steps in stabilizing the foreign currency market, introducing a market-based exchange rate, and working toward rebuilding reserves.
In response, Dr. Yunus expressed gratitude and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a free and credible national election before the upcoming holy month of Ramadan in February. “Once the election is over, I will return to my previous work,” he said.
The IMF chief stressed that strengthening revenue collection and reforming the banking sector are vital for long-term stability.
Dr. Yunus noted that his administration had inherited a collapsed economy, saying, “Some individuals literally looted money from banks and fled with bags full of cash.”
Both sides also exchanged views on regional issues, including the Gen-Z movement in Nepal and Bangladesh’s interest in joining ASEAN.
