Former U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a major defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal, its parent companies, and media mogul Rupert Murdoch, seeking at least $10 billion in damages. The lawsuit was filed in a federal court in the Southern District of Florida.
At the center of the case is a Wall Street Journal report that highlighted Trump’s alleged ties with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trump claims the article severely damaged his social reputation and political image, as well as caused financial harm.
According to Trump’s legal team, the publication was malicious and intentionally misleading, aimed at tarnishing his name. The lawsuit also names two reporters from the Journal, as well as Dow Jones & Company, a division of News Corp, as defendants.
In addition to the lawsuit, Trump has reportedly instructed the U.S. Department of Justice to file a motion in a Manhattan federal court seeking the public release of grand jury testimonies related to both Epstein and his former associate Ghislaine Maxwell.
Maxwell was convicted in 2021 on five federal counts for her role in the sexual abuse of underage girls, acting as an accomplice to Epstein.
Political analysts suggest that this lawsuit could have a significant impact on Trump’s political future, especially with the 2024 election approaching. Any perceived connection to Epstein, even if unfounded, could complicate Trump’s public image and campaign efforts.
