The Supreme Court of Bangladesh observed a minute of silence on Tuesday morning to honor the victims of the tragic military aircraft crash at Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has so far claimed 27 lives and injured over 150, including students.

Before the start of judicial proceedings in the Appellate Division, Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and six other justices stood in silence in the courtroom. Lawyers present also joined in the tribute to the deceased.

A notice signed by Supreme Court Registrar General Md. Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan stated that all judicial proceedings in both divisions of the Supreme Court would begin with a minute of silence, followed by a suspension of court activities from 2 PM onward on Tuesday.

In light of the devastating crash, the government declared a national day of mourning today. Another notice issued by the Registrar General emphasized the importance of proper observance across the judiciary, noting that people across the country are expressing grief and solidarity with the victims.

Following the directive of the Chief Justice, the Registrar General outlined three specific instructions to be followed by all subordinate courts and tribunals:

  1. The national flag must be flown at half-mast in all lower court and tribunal premises today (Tuesday).

  2. All courts and tribunals must observe a minute of silence before beginning proceedings today.

  3. All cultural programs scheduled between 22 July and 24 July in all District Judge Courts and Magistracy offices are to be postponed.

This solemn observance marks the judiciary’s expression of respect and solidarity with the victims and their families during this national tragedy.
