Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, MP, arrived in Barishal on Saturday to attend the 11-party alliance’s divisional rally, scheduled to take place later in the day.
Upon his arrival, he was welcomed at the Circuit House by Jamaat-e-Islami Central Assistant Secretary General and Barishal Regional Director Advocate Muazzam Hossain Helal, along with Central Executive Council member and Barishal Metropolitan Ameer Maulana Zahiruddin Muhammad Babar.
Several senior party leaders were also present during the reception, including Central Executive Council member Monjurul Islam Bhuiyan, Dhaka-4 lawmaker Syed Zainul Abedin, Dhaka District Ameer Maulana Delwar Hossain, Barishal District Ameer Principal Abdul Jabbar, Dhaka South Jamaat Office Secretary Kamrul Ahsan Hasan, former BM College Students’ Union (BAKSU) Assistant General Secretary Sheikh Neamul Karim, and former Barishal Metropolitan President of Islami Chhatra Shibir Sagir Bin Saeed, among others.
Earlier, on Friday night, Nahid Islam, MP, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the Opposition Chief Whip, arrived in Barishal as a special guest for the event.
The main rally of the 11-party alliance is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Central Hemayet Uddin Eidgah Ground in Barishal city. However, leaders and representatives from the alliance’s constituent parties started delivering speeches from 10:00 a.m., with participants arriving from all six districts of the Barishal division.
The event also features cultural performances by the Deshiya Sangskritik Sangsad and regional artists, including patriotic and protest-themed choral songs. Artists from across the division are showcasing traditional performances while dressed in their respective regional attire.
Before the main rally, at around 11:30 a.m., Dr. Shafiqur Rahman addressed a gathering of Jamaat-e-Islami’s female members at the Barishal District Shilpakala Academy auditorium as the chief guest.
According to the organizers, the women’s gathering was held in accordance with the party’s interpretation of religious guidelines regarding gender segregation. Male party members and media personnel were not permitted to enter the venue in order to maintain the arrangements made for female participants.
