A defamation case has been filed against National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasir Uddin Patwari, accusing him of intimidation and making defamatory remarks against Mirza Abbas, a political adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The court recorded the complainant’s statement and issued a summons ordering Patwari to appear before the court.

The case was filed on Sunday morning at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Md. Hasan Shahadat. Ashraful Islam, president of BNP’s Ramna Police Station unit, submitted the complaint as the plaintiff. The information was confirmed by the plaintiff’s lawyer, Advocate Md. Amirul Islam Amir.

According to the case statement, Mirza Abbas was the BNP candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, while Nasir Uddin Patwari contested the same seat as the NCP candidate. The complaint alleges that Patwari began making false and defamatory remarks against his rival candidate during the election period and continued doing so on several occasions afterward.

It further claims that after losing the election, Patwari intensified his criticism by spreading what the plaintiff describes as false and defamatory statements through social media and various online news outlets, along with issuing threats.

On March 5, the plaintiff reportedly noticed several online news reports featuring Patwari’s alleged remarks on Facebook. The complaint states that these statements are highly defamatory and condemnable, and that their circulation on social media has damaged the reputation of Mirza Abbas.

The case also alleges that Patwari has repeatedly made fabricated statements in an attempt to tarnish Abbas’s reputation and political career, violating standards of public conduct by publishing such remarks on social media platforms.

In the 13th parliamentary election, both Mirza Abbas and Nasir Uddin Patwari were nominated candidates from the Dhaka-8 constituency. According to the results cited in the complaint, Abbas won the seat with 59,366 votes, while Patwari secured 54,127 votes.
