2030 will be the 24th edition of the FIFA World Cup. This tournament will celebrate the centenary of World Cup football.

The first World Cup was held in 1930 in the South American country of Uruguay. The opening matches of the 2030 tournament will also be held in South America. However, not a single country, but three countries will host it – Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.

The remaining matches of the tournament will be held in the European countries of Spain and Portugal and the African country of Morocco.

Meanwhile, on April 10, the South American Football Governing Body (CONMEBOL) officially proposed to upgrade the 2030 World Cup to a 64-team tournament.

CONMEBOL organized a meeting on April 10. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was present at the meeting.

CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez said at the meeting, “(The expansion) will allow all countries to gain experience at the World Cup and no one in the world will be deprived of this festival. We believe that this centenary celebration will be unique. Because a hundred years can only be celebrated once.”

The proposal was first raised by Uruguayan Football Federation President Ignacio Alonso at a FIFA Council meeting in March. This time, the proposal was also taken up by the continental football governing body.

If the proposal is accepted, 128 matches will be held in the 2030 edition. That is double the 64-match format played from 1998 to 2022.
