Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin has said that restoring public trust in the Election Commission is currently the biggest challenge, alongside ensuring voter turnout, tackling misinformation on social media, and preventing the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the upcoming national elections.
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists on Saturday at the beginning of a views-exchange meeting with election officials from the Khulna region, held at the Khulna Regional Election Office.
The CEC expressed concern over how AI tools are now being used to fabricate voice and video content, making it possible to spread false information that mimics real people. “This is a modern threat—more dangerous than weapons. In one European country, elections had to be postponed due to the misuse of such technology,” he noted.
He also pointed out the unchecked spread of misinformation on social media platforms, saying, “Anyone can post false claims on Facebook, and without verification, thousands share it, sending misinformation to millions.”
Nasir Uddin further acknowledged that maintaining law and order will be another significant challenge during the next parliamentary elections. “However, with collective efforts, we believe we can overcome it,” he added.
In response to a question about the possibility of adopting a Proportional Representation (PR) voting system, the CEC clarified that such a shift would require amendments to the Constitution and existing laws. “Until those changes are made, we are preparing for the election as per the current system,” he said.
Stressing the need for credible polls, he declared, “For the sake of the nation, a free and fair election is essential. There will be no more midnight voting. We call on everyone to cooperate in ensuring a transparent and acceptable electoral process.”
Following the press briefing, the CEC held a closed-door meeting with Khulna’s regional election officials. The session was chaired by Khulna Regional Election Officer Faisal Kader.
