Leaders of the opposition alliance have strongly criticized parliamentary proceedings, alleging discrimination in the allocation of speaking time and violations of legislative procedures. The criticism came during a media briefing on Monday following a walkout staged by alliance lawmakers during Sunday’s parliamentary session.

Opposition lawmaker Nazibur Rahman claimed that members of the opposition were deprived of adequate opportunities to participate in debates. According to him, five minutes were deducted from the scheduled speaking time allotted to opposition lawmakers, resulting in only three members of the alliance being able to address the House.

He alleged that government lawmakers were treated differently. In particular, he pointed to the Home Minister’s speech, stating that the minister was allowed to speak for significantly longer than the allotted 40 minutes. Opposition leaders argued that government members continued to receive opportunities to speak even after 10:00 p.m., which they said contradicted prior understandings reached between both sides.

Concerns Over Bill Presentation Procedures

The opposition alliance also expressed dissatisfaction over the process of introducing bills in Parliament. Nazibur Rahman alleged that legislative proposals were being brought before the House without allowing lawmakers sufficient time to review the documents and raise objections.

According to opposition representatives, parliamentary rules require members to receive adequate documentation and time for scrutiny before legislation is debated. They argued that repeated use of special procedural authority was creating a pattern that undermined normal legislative practices.

Senior Opposition MP Denied Opportunity to Speak

Another issue raised by the alliance was the handling of procedural interventions in the chamber. Opposition leaders claimed that senior lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury was not permitted to speak on a point of order, describing the incident as one of the key reasons behind the walkout.

Alliance Leaders Condemn Parliamentary Conduct

A senior member of the alliance described the events as one of the most regrettable episodes in recent parliamentary history. He criticized what he viewed as unequal treatment between government and opposition lawmakers during debates.

The veteran parliamentarian argued that parliamentary schedules and speaking limits should be applied uniformly to all members regardless of political affiliation. He maintained that the opposition’s decision to leave the chamber was intended to protest what they considered unfair parliamentary practices.

Alliance leaders further warned that if opposition representatives continue to be denied what they view as fair opportunities to participate in parliamentary proceedings, they will consider additional forms of protest both inside and outside the legislature. They emphasized that their actions were aimed at defending the rights and representation of their constituents.
