If she is physically healthy and no new problems arise, BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia may go to London on December 29 for advanced treatment. She may leave Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for London on a flight during the day. Some of her personal and top doctors from the medical board will accompany Begum Zia.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “Begum Khaleda Zia may go to London on December 29 for advanced treatment. Although it is not final, we have such a thought.”
Khaleda Zia is suffering from liver cirrhosis. Doctors have said that she needs a liver transplant. In addition, 79-year-old Khaleda Zia has been suffering from various complications including heart disease, lung, kidney, arthritis, diabetes for a long time.
Khaleda Zia’s personal physician and BNP Standing Committee member Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain told reporters on October 29 that Khaleda Zia will first be taken to London in a ‘long distance specialized air ambulance’ for advanced treatment. From there, she will be taken to a multidisciplinary medical center in another country. That country is known to be the United States.
On February 8, 2018, the BNP Chairperson was sentenced in an ACC case related to the Zia Orphanage Trust and went to prison. Later, in March 2020, the then Awami League government granted Begum Zia a conditional temporary release through an executive order. Her temporary release period was extended every six months. After the change of power on August 5 this year, President Md. Shahabuddin ordered the permanent release of Khaleda Zia, who was undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Bashundhara, the next day (August 6).
