A state mourning will be observed today on the occasion of ‘July Martyrs Day’. Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, was martyred in police firing in Rangpur on July 16 last year during the anti-quota movement. The government has declared this day as ‘July Martyrs Day’.

A notification was issued by the Cabinet Division on July 2, announcing the decision to observe state mourning on Wednesday (July 16) on the occasion of the day.

The notification signed by Deputy Secretary of the Cabinet Division, Tania Afroz, said that the government has declared July 16 every year as ‘July Martyrs’ Day’ and has decided to include it as a ‘B’ category day in the Cabinet Division’s circular dated October 21, 2024 regarding the observance of national and international days.

On the occasion of the day, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on Wednesday in all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions and educational institutions in Bangladesh, as well as in all government and private buildings and Bangladesh missions abroad.

In addition, special prayers will be held in all mosques of Bangladesh on Wednesday for the repose of the souls of the martyrs. Special prayers will be organized in other religious institutions for the peace of their souls.
