Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury is set to take oath as the 26th Chief Justice of Bangladesh on Sunday at Bangabhaban. He will succeed the incumbent Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Senior Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Law Rezaul Karim confirmed that the oath-taking ceremony of the new Chief Justice would be held on Sunday at the official presidential residence.

According to constitutional provisions, outgoing Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed will formally retire on December 27 upon reaching the age of 67.

Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury completed his LLB (Honours) and LLM degrees from the University of Dhaka and later obtained another master’s degree in International Law from the United Kingdom. He was enrolled as a lawyer in the Judge Court in 1985 and in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1987.

During the tenure of the then BNP-led government, he was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court Division on August 27, 2003. Two years later, his appointment was made permanent. Most recently, on August 12, 2024, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him as a judge of the Appellate Division.
