Govt to Reassess Power Plant Deals from Previous Administration

On Tuesday, the government announced plans to reassess all Independent Power Plant (IPP) contracts made during the previous Awami League tenure, citing numerous concerns over inconsistencies and lack of transparency.

This decision was shared by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed following a meeting of the Council Committee on Economic Affairs held at the Cabinet Division.

Dr. Ahmed noted that the move follows a Supreme Court directive calling for legal examination of the agreements. As a result, the government has approved a proposal to seek legal advice and begin discussions aimed at reviewing the deals.

Earlier, the High Court had ruled two sections of the controversial Indemnity Act in the power sector as unconstitutional. These sections had previously shielded government decisions from legal scrutiny and allowed full control over power sector planning.

Although the court acknowledged actions already taken under the invalidated provisions, it emphasized the need to bring all government-run power plants into full operation for the sake of national interest.

In the same briefing, the finance adviser also addressed the country’s food stock levels, reporting a stable reserve of key grains such as rice, paddy, and wheat. He mentioned that market prices may fluctuate, but assured that the authorities remain alert and proactive in monitoring the situation.

Separately, the government approved two preliminary proposals for the civil and electrical/mechanical development of the “July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum” under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.

Dr. Salehuddin chaired this meeting along with sessions of the Council Committee on Government Purchase and the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee.
